2019 – “Reconstruction and covering a face on a mask” video,13:03min
This is a site-specific performance video work using debris from the Topaz War Relocation Center in Utah, USA, where my great-grandfather was interned from 1942 to 1945. The theme of this work was to reconstruct memory, and I performed while imagining the people who once lived in that place.
この作品は、米国ユタ州のトパーズ戦争転住センター跡地で、私の曽祖父が1942年から 1945年まで収容された場所に残っていた瓦礫を使って 行った、サイトスペフィフィッ ク・パフォーマンス・ビデオ作品です。本作において記憶の再構築といテーマを用いて、 かつてその場所で存在 していた人々のためのパフォーマンスを行いました。

This performance video piece was filmed at the site of the Tule Lake War Relocation Center in the United States, which existed from 1942 to 1946. The camp incarcerated Japanese-Americans who were deemed "anti-American" by a "Loyalty questionnaire" administered to all inmates of the camp. I used the Japanese flag and the U.S. Stars and Stripes in my performance to represent the conflict that Japanese Americans felt about their national identity at that time and the structure of the Japan-U.S. relationship that has continued since the end of World War II and to express the emptiness of people at the mercy of the nation.
このパフォーマンスビデオ作品は、1943年から1946年まで存在した、アメリカのトゥー リーレイク戦争移住センターの跡地で撮影を行いました。この収容所には全収容所の収容 者に行なわれた「忠誠テスト」によって「反米的」とされた日系人が収容されていました。 私は日本国旗と米国星条旗を用いたパフォーマンスを行い、当時の日系人の感じていたナ ショナル・アイデンティティへの葛藤と、戦後から続く日米関係の構造を表象し、国家と いうものに翻弄される人々の空虚さを表現しました。
These works are what I painted the silhouettes of the Japanese American internment camps on the cover of the LIFE Magazin published during the Pacific theaters of World War II when the Japanese American internment camps existed.
この作品は太平洋戦争中の日系人強制収容所が存在していた時期に発刊されていたライフ 紙の表紙の上に、私が日系人収容所のシルエットを描いた作品です。
These works are what I blacked out over the political leaders of the Japanese empire that were on the cover of the TIME Magazin published during World War II.
